Celebrities - They're just like us.
I am boycotting The Devil Wears Prada 2. Twelve year old me is rioting against this decision. I WANT my Butter Birkin, I WANT gay Stanley Tucci, I WANT to giggle and kick my feet in a reclining movie theater chair. I want to be transported to a different place and a very different world by the indelible performances of this star studded cast.
When The Devil Wears Prada came out, Anne Hathaway was known for more than just Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted, Emily Blunt wasn't a global name just yet, and Stanley Tucci was already a seasoned actor with a few awards. Meryl Streep was hands down the biggest name attached to this film (other than the "indirect" link to Anna Wintour). The names of, performances by, and career growth of the aforementioned folks are a big reason why this movie is relevant 20 years later.
The leads of The Devil Wears Prada 2 are currently on a global press tour, using their platform to mourn the slow death of print media, model high fashion, and push this project towards the $80 – $95M domestic opening weekend box office gross revenue estimates. They will profit off a story about working in fashion and media, yet I doubt they are even aware of the unfair firings that took place at Vogue mere months ago.
It's not just about the fashion and media industry for me - it's about wages and working conditions and toxic corporate culture. In 2025, over 300,000 black women lost their jobs for a variety of reasons. Most people in a city like New York have to juggle multiple jobs just to pay the bills and that's only if they can find the work. Thousands of people go to work every day having to code switch, compromise their values, or limit self expression just to afford their lifestyle. I don't think the celebrities attached to The Devil Wears Prada 2 are responsible for fixing labor and employment or cost of living problems in our country - but releasing a movie that glamorizes an exclusive, exploitative industry in 2026, without any acknowledgment of what workers are actually living through right now, feels deeply tone deaf.
I think about a celebrity like Jane Fonda who has lobbied congress, been arrested, protested, and given so much of her life to activism. When the movie 9 to 5 came out, she used her platform to help catapult the 9-5 Labor Union into national spotlight, which improved working conditions for thousands of women across the United States. At 88, she continues to advocate for gender equality, speaks out against oil companies for environmental protections, and has been vehemently anti war since long before I was born. She's not a saint, she's a person with a platform trying to make the world a better place.
I wish that more of the Hollywood Elite would organize with us. We need those with so much social capital to pressure people in power for change. They need to stand up for women losing their jobs. They need to stand up for families being torn apart. They need to stand up for free speech and public media. They need to stand up for people making minimum wage who spend half a day of pay just to see a movie. They need to stand up for something other than themselves.
32 year old me has has had enough. My money, my time, and my energy are all finite resources that I keep handing over to the uber wealthy. I love movies, I love what Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway gave me when I was 12, I love being in a theater... but I WANT to see this movie flop, I WANT the bubble of marketers and studio executives who think that The Meryl Streep makes a project untouchable to burst, I WANT to be treated better by the people who think they govern us on socioeconomic and political levels. I want us to stop acting like these people are something more than just people. Until celebrities show up for us, I refuse to continue showing up for them so...
I am boycotting The Devil Wears Prada 2 and I wish you would too.
